Music Monday is the first Monday of May and sponsored by the Coalition for Music Education in Canada and the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM ). The special event demonstrates an appreciation for music in our lives and in our schools.
To celebrate, NAMM encourages schools, and community and professional organizations to perform one piece of music at the same time. The performance is intended to transcend all genres and unite people through the melody and the act of performing the piece at the same time. The idea is that if one were to open the front door of his or her home and stand on the street on the first Monday in May, one would hear music and the skies would be filled with melody.
Last year, the event inspired more than 700,000 students across North America to participate in a simultaneous concert and celebrate music education in schools.
The Music Monday event kicks off NAMM’s annual National Wanna Play Music Week. If you've always wished you could play a musical instrument, but for whatever reason haven't done it yet -- this is your chance!
Or maybe you once played, but life started moving too fast and the music stopped. Well, it's never too late to pick it up again and enjoy music’s many benefits.
NAMM encourages anyone who has always wanted to play an instrument, but hasn't tried yet to take the “Pledge to Play.”
Here are a few ways to participate in the fun of National Wanna Play Music Week:
Music Monday, May 7 - Everyone is encouraged to pick up an instrument of their choice and jam in a collaborative show of support for music education or pick up an instrument any time that day and make some music!
Tuesday, May 8 — Try out a new music-making app or video game and see how fun it is when music making melds with the tech world!
Wednesday, May 9 — You’d be surprised by how many celebrities (including actors, authors, sports figures and politicians) also play instruments! NAMM will be issuing a public poll to see who the favorite high-profile “Unexpected Musician” is and will promote the outcome on www.wannaplaymusic.com.
Thursday, May 10 — Take the "Pledge to Play" and encourage your Facebook friends to join you in taking the pledge.
Friday, May 11- Sunday, May 13 — This weekend is dedicated to the music retail store and will highlight the benefits of people visiting their local music store for all of their musical needs.
Happy music making!
