Much like a school district, MSTA tends to look at the year in relation to a school calendar. We implement new programs for the first semester, further evaluate during the second semester and use the summer to make changes and improvements. Last summer we decided to tweak how we administer one of our most basic programs, our Legal Services.
MSTA offers members the ability to speak directly with an attorney for employment-related legal questions. In the past, this process was sometimes convoluted and confusing for our members. In response, the Legal Services Department decided to streamline the whole process. Now, if you have a question you can call a dedicated, toll-free number (866-343-6186) that rings directly to Legal Services. Someone in the legal department will listen to your concerns, take down some information and get you in touch with the best person to resolve the issue. It may be one of our two staff attorneys, one of our 14 field representatives or one of our network of attorneys operating throughout the state.
We also recognized that some people want access to information before making a phone call, so we’ve added resources on the MSTA website under the Protection section. There you can find information about class size, planning time, discrimination and harassment, tenure, PIPs, transfers and reassignments and unemployment.
As we enter the second semester, we are pleased with the changes. We continue to add resources to the website to better inform our members. Check out these resources.
Still need to speak with someone or have a topic you'd like to see on the resouces page? Call Legal Services at 866-343-6186 or email legalservices@msta.org.
