It seems when a gadget hits the market, and it can be even remotely identified with education, it appears in a school somewhere. Does anyone know if the Kindle from Amazon.com is being used to motivate otherwise unmotivated readers out there? It is a pricey little thing, but then so is a laptop computer - and I know they've been purchased/provided for student use. . .

I agree! Kids LOVE gadgets. As a hs librarian, I believe it would increase reading rates! The problem, as already stated, is the prohibitive costs to schools and the size (easy to lose/have stolen)!...Too bad Amazon hasn't worked something out for educators!

$489 for a book reader!!? Holy cow! You can buy 2 netbooks for the price of one Kindle. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,483564,00.html You can read PDF books on a netbook screen, and a netbook can do a whole lot more. Students can then extend their learning researching on the internet and write about issue they just read in the book.
Joan mentioned price. If all the student's textbooks were in an electronic format so they could be put on the netbook, the savings in printing costs could pay for the computer. A netbook would certainly lighten the backpack load and could turn the learning load from shallow textbooks to higher level research.
